It falls on the last day of the dark fortnight of Jyestha ( May – June ) the second month of Oriya year . This is observed with much sanctity by the married Hindu women . This is the occasion when the wife observes fast and prays with great devotion wishing a long life for her husband .
According to mythology and Hindu belief Savitri was the beautiful daughter of the king Aswapati . Aswapati had given complete freedom to choose her husband at her will . After a long search , she came across a handsome youngman , Satyavan in the forest . He was cutting wood . Savitri came to know that the youngman was a prince in exile . He was living in the forest with his blind parents . Savitri decided to marry Satyavan . But Satyavan was cursed to die young The king persuaded Savitri to select another man . But Savitri was determined to marry him and got married . One day Satyavan while cutting wood in the Jungle fell down from a tree and died .
Yamaraj , the Death – God , arrived to take away the soul from the dead body . Savitri didnot allow Yamaraj to do his duty . She followed Him . Being pleased with
the arguments of Savitri Yamaraj asked her to take three boons instead of the soul . Savitri defeated Yamaraj with the riddles and Yamaraj gave back the life of Satyavan . This festival teaches women to be virtuous and devoted to their husbands .
